Founder's Day Celebrates Dorothy Goodman and WIS's 60th Birthday
On Thursday, January 15, WIS founder Dorothy Goodman would have turned 100! All three divisions celebrated Founder's Day and kicked off WIS's 60th anniversary year.
At the Primary School, Associate Head of School Natasha Bhalla '91 told students about Dorothy and why she decided to create WIS, and asked them to think about what it means to be a part of WIS. Our Grade 1 teachers invited several WIS alumnae — who are now on the WIS faculty — to share their favorite childhood memories of the School.
On the Tregaron Campus, the Middle and Upper School communities gathered in the gym for a special afternoon assembly and pep rally, learning about the significance of the day and enjoying our beautiful 60th anniversary video. WIS welcomed one of Dorothy's sons, Matthew Goodman, who shared memories of his mother and WIS — including painting the Mansion! He noted: "I know our mother would be very proud about how far the School has come over these past 60 years, and proud of all of you. She couldn't have asked for a better birthday present."
Upper School Principal Francesca Mulazzi also announced the creation of a new award to be given on Grade 12 Prize Day: The Dorothy Goodman Award for Multilingual Leadership. And sculptor Kevin Reese explained our 60th anniversary installation art project — where he'll be working with every WIS student to create a permanent piece of kinetic public art, or mobile, for the School.
We are so excited to see what the next 60 years of WIS bring!
