ADMISSIONS PROCESS

The admissions process varies by grade. To view the admissions process for a specific grade, please select an option below and expand the appropriate panel to see details:

As a first step we highly recommend completing an online Inquiry Form to request an information packet and/or schedule a virtual Information Session.

APPLYING FOR PRESCHOOL, PRE-K, AND KINDERGARTEN

 

Complete an Inquiry Form (highly recommended)

Would you like to learn more about WIS? Complete an online inquiry form.

Attend an Information Session | Virtual (highly recommended)

Register to attend a small group information session (offered weekly, September through December). The program will last approximately 60 minutes. Register though our online inquiry form. Parents who have attended an information session will be invited to attend an in-person tour on select days from October through December.

Submit an Application and Application Fee (required)

Applications are submitted and managed through our online Admissions Portal. The Application Fee is $75, however, a reduced rate of $25 is available to families who intend to apply for financial aid. Applications and Application Fees are due January 5. Financial Aid applications are due January 15.

Complete a Parent Questionnaire (required)

The Parent Questionnaire contains five questions that are designed to help us learn about the applicant and the applicant's family. It is available through our Admissions Portal. Please note that WIS’s admissions process focuses on the applicant; therefore, parent interviews are not a part of our standard process. If a parent would like to schedule an individual meeting with a member of the admissions team, please contact the admissions office.

Schedule an Applicant Visit (required)

Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten applicants who are in the Washington, DC area will come to the Primary School for a small-group, in-person visit. Visits will take place on select Saturdays in January and February. Visits will last approximately 60 minutes and can be scheduled through the Admissions Portal. Applicants who are living outside of the Washington, DC area will have an opportunity to have a small-group, virtual visit. All visits will be scheduled through the Admissions Portal.

Submit a School Recommendation (required, can be waived)

If the applicant has been enrolled in a school or formal daycare setting, a School Recommendation (completed by a current teacher) will be required. This requirement will be waived if the applicant has been at home or with an individual caretaker. Parents should contact the Admissions Office to request a waiver. The Recommendation can be requested through the Admissions Portal and is due February 1.

Submit Supplemental Documents (optional)

Evaluations such as the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) are strictly optional. Secondary recommendations are also strictly optional and are not commonly submitted. If parents would like to submit a secondary recommendation, we ask that you limit it to only one additional recommendation.

Decision Notifications

Admissions decisions will be announced on February 28, 2025 via email. Families will then have until March 15 to accept or decline the offer of admission. Enrollment contracts will become fully binding on June 2, 2025.

Admissions Testing (required)

Grade 1-5 applicants who are living in the Washington, DC area will come to the Primary School for admissions testing in English and math. If an applicant is applying to the Dual-Language Program, there will also be a written assessment in French or Spanish. All testing will be scheduled through the Admissions Portal.

Applicants who are living outside of the Washington, DC area will have their written admissions tests sent directly to their current school to administer on WIS's behalf.

All applicants to the Dual-Language Program (English/French or English/Spanish) will also schedule a virtual language assessment with our Language Coordinators.

Virtual Applicant Visit (required for non-local applicants)

Because we will not have an opportunity to meet non-local applicants in person, they will be required to participate in a virtual Applicant Visit with a member of the admissions team. All visits will be scheduled through the Admissions Portal.

School Recommendation and Transcript Request (required)

The School Recommendation (from a current teacher) and Transcript Request Form can be requested through the Admissions Portal. Current grades/reports, plus the grades/reports from the previous year are required. Due February 1.

Supplemental Documents (optional)

The Applicant Interview provides an opportunity for the Associate Director for Middle and Upper School Admissions to get to know the applicant. In order to accommodate demand, the interview should be scheduled as soon as possible through our online Admissions Portal.

Register for an Applicant Visit (required for all local applicants)

Local applicants will come to campus to attend two classes, participate in a small group admissions activity, meet with key administrators, and enjoy lunch together. Please select an available date in the Admissions Portal.

If applying to an intermediate/advanced language program, the applicant will also have an assessment in French, Spanish, or Chinese. Testing will take place on select Saturdays in January.
