Interdisciplinary Learning Between Grade 12 French & Mandarin Students

From Christy Nong, Tregaron Mandarin teacher: On Monday, November 24, Grade 12 students in Mme Pauline Karroum's French A (SL & HL) classes and my Mandarin B HL class came together to explore the literary and cultural dimensions of the book To Live, originally written in Chinese. The French students had chosen this work as part of their translation study, creating a perfect bridge for cross-language exploration.

In this unique collaboration, the Mandarin students focused on the historical and cultural context of the book and visited the French classroom to share their insights. Charlotte Kaye and Sophia Li delivered an impressive presentation on the historical moments depicted in the novel, including the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward. Following this, students engaged in a lively Kahoot quiz covering the book’s history and geography, and participated in a Q&A session. French students asked thoughtful questions about China’s social and cultural transformations, sparking rich discussions comparing life in historical and modern China, as well as differences in societal structures reflected in literature.

This collaboration allowed students from both language programs to communicate, inquire, and deepen their understanding of the novel from multiple perspectives. Mandarin students also learned how French students interpreted a work through translation, discussing how nuances of the author’s ideas are conveyed across languages.

The learning experience extended beyond the classroom. Students enjoyed Chinese tea and traditional snacks, alongside French desserts and fresh baguettes, creating a warm cultural exchange. This shared experience reinforced not just academic understanding but also cross-cultural connection, fostering mutual respect and curiosity.

This event embodies WIS’s mission to cultivate multilingual, international-minded students who can serve as ambassadors of understanding, communication, and collaboration. By connecting literature, language, history, and culture, WIS students are learning to bridge worlds, reduce misunderstandings, and celebrate diversity — all while enjoying learning together.
